You Can’t Rush Your Healing
Trust me, I’ve tried.
Recently, I got to see Trevor Hall in concert for the second time. If you don’t know him, his music is pure soul medicine.
I first heard his song You Can’t Rush Your Healing during yoga teacher training about five years ago. My instructor played it while we laid in stillness after a long practice, and I remember feeling something ignite deep in my body. It was like every word dropped straight into my soul, quietly reminding me of a truth I didn’t want to admit: you cannot force your healing.
Rewind to last year, when I was in Charleston for my daughter’s 21st birthday. I followed an intuitive nudge and, on a whim, checked to see if Trevor was playing nearby. He was. Less than a mile from our Airbnb. And it was on the Saturday we were there. Old me would have said no. I would have told myself the trip was “for my daughter” and dismissed the pull. But instead, I asked her if she’d mind me going solo. She laughed and said, “Mom, as long as you don’t drag me there, go for it.”
So I went. My daughter and her boyfriend even walked me to the theater. It was intimate. Just him, stripped down. No band. No distractions. And when he sang You Can’t Rush Your Healing, I sat there in awe. It was my anthem. My theme song. My reminder that healing is not linear. It cannot be forced.
A few weeks ago I got the chance to see him again. Totally different vibe. Outdoor venue. Lawn chairs. A friend I don’t see nearly enough. We had the best time—talking nonstop for hours in the car, laughing, sharing, connecting. It was beautiful in its own way. But he didn’t play my song….or many others I would have loved to hear. There was a big focus on the band because he had a mix of American and Indian artists and a lot of jamming (think Dave Matthew’s Band).
And I wasn’t even upset. Slightly disappointed, sure but it passed fast and I realized something pretty cool.
The experience was the gift.
It reminded me that healing isn’t about chasing the one moment, the one answer, the one thing you think will “do it” for you. It’s about all the little layers along the way.
You will never release or receive anything you’re not ready for.
My breathwork mentor Vaughn always says that. And she’s right.
So here’s some questions to sit with:
Where in your life are you trying to rush something that simply isn’t ready?
What meaning are you attaching to it not happening on your timeline?
What would shift if you trusted that the timing is already perfect, even if you can’t see it yet?
Healing is about unbecoming so you can become your highest version of you.
So take the pressure off. You don’t have to force it. You don’t have to figure it all out today. Just stay open and see what unfolds.
Listen to his stripped down version here cause wow.
