The Fine Line Between Grace vs Excuses

I had a moment of clarity I couldn’t wait to share because, even though I teach this work, it still sneaks up on me sometimes. This week, I sat down to do something I’d been putting off for months—a task I told myself I “didn’t need to worry about” because, oh, I’ve got time. Sound familiar?

But the truth?

By avoiding it, I was stacking invisible weight on my shoulders. It wasn’t a conscious weight, but it sat there—a quiet voice whispering, You didn’t do that thing, you didn’t do that thing.

Here’s the kicker: It took me less than 20 minutes to handle.

And I realized something important: There’s a fine line between grace and excuse.

  • Grace says: I’m human. I can’t do it all right now.

  • Excuse says: I’ll put this off because it feels hard (or I’m not sure how).

My brain made it way more complicated than it needed to be, and I bet yours does sometimes, too.

So this is your reminder: Eat the frog. Do the thing.

Because on the other side of it is freedom—freedom from that invisible weight, the mental dance of "should I or shouldn't I?"

Here are a few simple ways to start:

  • Identify one “frog” you’ve been avoiding. Is it that email you’ve been dreading, a cluttered drawer, or a phone call you’ve been putting off? Write it down.

  • Set a timer for 20 minutes. Tell yourself you’ll just get started. Often, starting is the hardest part, and the rest flows from there.

  • Celebrate once it’s done! Whether it’s a deep breath, a quick dance break, or simply a moment to say, I did it, let yourself feel the relief of checking it off your list.

What’s one thing you’ll tackle today to lighten your load? Hit reply and let me know—I’d love to cheer you on.

You’ve got this. And remember: You’re already enough, just as you are.
